The Black American International Union’s Position
The Black American International Union (BAIU) is not a religious organization. We are an ethnic, cultural, historical, educational, and civic organization dedicated to the recognition, preservation, advancement, and documentation of Black Americans as a distinct ethnic community within the United States.
Our mission is centered on history, heritage, culture, genealogy, education, civil rights, economic development, and historical preservation—not on promoting or requiring any particular religion or system of belief.
Religious Freedom
The Black American community has always been religiously and spiritually diverse. Throughout American history, Black Americans have practiced many different faiths and philosophies.
These include, but are not limited to:
- Christianity
- Islam
- Judaism
- Hebrew Israelite traditions
- Traditional Indigenous spiritual practices
- African-derived religious traditions
- Other faiths and philosophies
- No religious affiliation
Membership in the Black American International Union is not determined by religious belief.
Our Position on Faith
The BAIU respects every member’s constitutional right to freedom of religion and freedom of conscience.
Our organization does not require members to:
- Convert to a religion
- Accept a religious doctrine
- Participate in religious ceremonies
- Adopt a particular spiritual belief
- Reject their existing faith
Likewise, members should respect the sincerely held religious beliefs—or non-beliefs—of others.
Hebrew Israelite Traditions
Some Black Americans identify with one or more Hebrew Israelite traditions. Others identify as Christian, Muslim, Jewish, members of Indigenous spiritual traditions, followers of other faiths, or as non-religious.
The BAIU does not endorse or oppose any particular religious movement. Individuals are free to practice their faith in accordance with their own convictions and the laws of the United States.
Unity Through Heritage
The foundation of the Black American International Union is our shared history, heritage, culture, and commitment to the advancement of Black Americans as an ethnic community.
Our unity is based on our common civic goals and historical identity—not on religious uniformity.
Our Commitment
The Black American International Union welcomes individuals from diverse religious backgrounds who support our mission and values. We believe that people of different faiths and philosophies can work together to preserve history, strengthen communities, expand educational opportunities, promote economic development, and pursue the recognition of Black Americans as a distinct ethnic community.
Our strength comes from shared purpose, mutual respect, and a commitment to the future of our people.
